This week myself, Claire Fennelow (Executive Director) and shadow board member Celine Amara joined first year Events Management students at Bournemouth University over zoom to speak to them as part of their induction week. Dr Paola Vizcaino, Senior Academic & Programme Leader for Events Management in the Department of Sport & Event Management introduced us and then opened the discussion.
Celine is in her final year of the course, and began the conversation by telling the students about her experience so far. She talked about what she had learnt so far, shared top tips on making the most of the course, and spoke about her placement year and the impact Covid had had on it.
She then handed to myself, so I could speak about what EVCOM does, generally but especially for young people. I talked about our shadow board and the brilliant ideas they are already bringing to the table, giving the students a sneak peak into some of the initiatives we are working on for young people to be launched in the coming months. I also shared the opportunity to enter The Realise Award and win mentorship with top corporate events companies.
Finally we handed over to Claire, who shared her expertise on what exactly corporate events really means! She talked about the scope and variety of the industry, from conferences to trade shows to incentive travel, and showed two award-winning examples packed with creativity, to give the students a flavour of what a corporate event could entail.
It was a really rewarding experience to speak to students at the beginning of their journey into the events sector, and we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!
